The Home Lab

I feel that every article I read is somehow about “Just put into the Cloud” or “just use this SaaS tool”. I don’t want to do that … Not for some ideological reasons or for the fear of “vendor lock”, both are real and I do feel them to some extent.

No I want to self-host since I find it quite fun to think about how I want to solve some of my hosting issues. I don’t need all that much resources to make my setup work for me and just me.

It’s fun to discover new tools and techniques, I see it as way of learning something new.

Not My First Rodeo

I have played around with the idea of a home lab in the past. I have never done it quite all the way though. This time it’s a bit different. I have clear goals and sub-goal that are to be reached, solved and revised.

I’m starting on a small scale, one machine with some disk space and lots of memory and many cores.

As I write and add services to my home lab, do research and leverage AI to ask questions about setups. I do wonder am I just wasting time? The setups I have done have all been done with some help of an AI.

This blog was started with a clear goal of not having any content generated by an AI. I want it to be imperfect and crude, slightly off in ways that are kinda weird. English is not my first language and it will be noticeable in my way of writing. That is the point - I want it to be messy.

No back to the home lab being built with the aid of AI. I use it mostly in an exploratory way, write a setup question and see what kind of result I get. I do this a couple of times and tweak my prompt each time in order to see if the results differ to each other and in what way.

I’m kinda getting fed up with the “Yeah that an excellent setup - …” or “You are absolutely right … " and so on.
